Jordan G. McFaull Editor-in-Chief Award Endowment

“Give me the one who never ceases to be ready for the new day ahead and tomorrow’s better horizon…”

– From "Passion" by Jordan Guzzino McFaull, 2005

The Loyola University College of Law’s Jordan G. McFaull Editor-in-Chief Award is now an endowed award to be given annually in perpetuity. The Jordan G. McFaull Award was first established in 2017 by Lynette Guzzino, J.D. '90, and Rod McFaull, J.D. '75, in memory of their son, Jordan G. McFaull J.D. '14. The award seeks to acknowledge Jordan’s contributions to the College of Law by promoting excellence in the field of maritime law. The family endowed the award in early 2020.

Jordan McFaull attended Loyola University College of Law from 2011 to 2014. He served as editor of Loyola’s Maritime Law Journal and created the journal’s successful online blog. Jordan passed the bar in 2014 and practiced maritime law at the firm of Mouledoux, Bland, Legrand & Brackett until his death in 2015.

Jordan was born in New Orleans in 1988 and grew up in Kentucky. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of seven. Highly driven and compassionate from a young age, Jordan was an exceptional student and athlete throughout high school. He attended Beechwood High School in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky, where he was president of the school’s Junior Statesmen of America Chapter, a Division III All-American football player, and a Governor’s Scholar. He participated in the Junior Statesmen summer program at Princeton and Stanford Universities and was a Rotary Club Speech Winner. Jordan also received a Harvard Book Award and the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award in Humanities and Social Sciences.

An active community volunteer during high school, Jordan spent time each week helping at the Our Daily Bread after school program for underprivileged children. He also volunteered at his local children’s library and tutored children with mental and physical disabilities. Jordan travelled to Buras, Louisiana, during spring break in 2006 to help with rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

As an undergraduate, Jordan majored in English and history at Tulane University. He was a member of Tulane’s rugby and crew teams and served as president of the school’s Kappa Alpha chapter. Jordan received the Donald Pizer Award in American Literature and graduated cum laude in 2011.

Following in his parents’ footsteps, Jordan attended Loyola University College of Law. He studied maritime law like his father before him, and Professor Arthur Crais was Jordan’s mentor and friend. Jordan was editor-in-chief of Loyola’s Maritime Law Journal for the 2013-2014 academic year, and he started the journal’s online blog, “The Loyola Current.” Jordan graduated and passed the bar in 2014 and was hired by the firm of Mouledoux, Bland, Legrand & Brackett in New Orleans. Jordan worked at the firm for one year before he passed away in August 2015 as a result of complications from type 1 diabetes.

The Winter 2016 issue of the Maritime Law Journal was dedicated to Jordan, with Prof. Crais writing, “Anyone who knew or even met [Jordan] was struck by his joie de vivre and knew he was a very special individual who made those who came in contact with him feel special themselves. He treated every person with respect and was always ready to assist. His enthusiasm for every endeavor he assumed was infectious and inspired those with whom he worked with the same fervor.”

Jordan’s parents established the Jordan G. McFaull Editor-in-Chief Award as a way to continue Jordan’s passion for maritime law and his work with the Maritime Law Journal. The award is given each year to the journal’s editor-in-chief. The 2020 recipient of the award is Blair Boyd, J.D. '20.
